Phyllis ‘Nan’ Shapiro

Phyllis Barbara Shapiro
June 17, 1932 - February 2, 2025

Phyllis Barbara Shapiro, a woman of remarkable grace, fierce independence, and boundless love, passed away on February 2, 2025, surrounded by her children. Born to Louis Nierenberg and Ella Klein in Brooklyn, NY, Phyllis was a force-elegant yet strong, compassionate yet fearless. She was the beloved wife of the late Lawrence Shapiro. Larry was her partner in life, and together they shared many beautiful years filled with love and laughter.

Phyllis's greatest pride and joy were her four children and their spouses: Ricki and Ken Kovacs, Shari Shapiro and Allen Glucksman, Marc and Robin Shapiro, and Mitch and Marlisa Shapiro, whom she nurtured with endless love and wisdom. But it was in her role as "Nan" to her eight grandchildren and their spouses-Carey Kovacs, Elissa and Jay Hyne, Scott and Rebecca Glucksman, Deena and Eli Schaffer, Jessica Shapiro, Cristina Shapiro and Garrett Hyde, Ali Shapiro, and Jordan Shapiro-and her eleven great-grandchildren-Abigail, Lily, Emilia, Brady, Jude, Rainen, Austin, Gunnar, Jack, Naomi, and Callum-that she truly shined. Nan had an extraordinary way of making each child feel like the most special person in the world, wrapping them in love, laughter, and, of course, impeccable style advice.

A true fashionista at heart, Phyllis believed in the power of a great outfit. Whether she was dressing for dinner, a costume party or just a trip to the store, she carried herself with an effortless elegance that turned heads and sparked admiration. Her keen eye for fashion was more than just an aesthetic-it was an extension of her vibrant personality, a reflection of the confidence and grace she exuded every day.

Beyond her style, Phyllis possessed a sharp wit and an infectious sense of humor that could brighten any room. She had a way of finding laughter in life's chaos and used humor to bring people together, ease difficult moments, and remind everyone not to take life too seriously. No matter the situation, she often reassured those around her with a simple, knowing smile and her favorite phrase: "We'll see what happens." It was both a philosophy and a gentle reminder that life, in all its unpredictability, was meant to be embraced. Even in her final days, her quick wit and playful spirit never wavered.

Phyllis was a powerhouse who never hesitated to stand up for what was right. She was a fierce advocate for those in need, a dear friend to many, and a voice of strength and reason. Her legacy of compassion, resilience, and kindness will continue to inspire all who were lucky enough to know her. She was, in every sense of the word, unforgettable.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the Stamford Jewish Community Center, located at 1035 Newfield Ave., Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking.
